Bharatiya Jnanpith Award

 

Ø  Field                            :           Literature.

Ø  Instituted                     :           22nd May 1961.

Ø  Prize                            :           The Jnanpith Award carries a citation, shawl, srifal, 

                                                     a bronze Replica of Vagdevi (Saraswati), the goddess 

                                                     of learning and a cash prize of Rs. 11 lakh.

Ø  First recipients             :           Malayam writer G. Shankar Kurup (Kerela) in 1965.

Ø  First female recipients :           Bengali writer Ashapurna Devi (West Bengal) in 1976.

Ø  Sponsored by               :           Bharatiya Jnanpith, a culture-literacy society founded in 

                                                    1944 by Shanti Prasad Jain, an eminent industrialist.

Before 1982, the award was given for a single piece of work by writer, but after 1982, the award is being given for overall contribution to the Indian Literature.
